What is Quality?
Is it the look? The feel? The function? The specific materials? Some combination of all of these?
I've thought a lot about quality when designing the Z Caddy Slide. I truly believe the Slide is the highest-quality pouch-carrying experience out there if you want a slim, discreet, easy-opening pouch tin.
But we have gotten some pushback on one aspect: the plastic lid.
Not All Lids Are Created Equal
A Slide customer was a little disappointed in the plastic lid and sent me the name of a company that makes anodized aluminum pill containers — the same material as our Z Caddies.
So I ordered one — and I was surprised by the quality.
Unfortunately, not in a good way.
The lid and base were both metal — and when I slid it open, the metal-on-metal grated together. It got stuck easily, the force wasn't smooth, and it was noisy. Overall: deeply unsatisfying.
In contrast, the Slide’s plastic lid slides smoothly, quietly, with consistent force throughout the movement. For me, there’s no question the performance is superior.
But what was interesting to me is that even though metal-on-metal is a worse experience, people might still perceive it as higher quality.
Which helped me learn two things...
First — I need to educate.
The Slide is a new, innovative product. There's a slight learning curve — how to load it, what it should feel like.
Once you're used to it, there's no going back. But if you're not prepared, you might not get the best experience.
Second — customer feedback is REALLY valuable.
I can't perfectly predict how customers will react, so I need real feedback to shape product improvements.
